Introduction: Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy that uses essential oils extracted from aromatic plants to promote physical, emotional and mental well-being. Orange essential oil, obtained from the extraction of the main chemical substances of Citrus sinensis, is an extremely important compound in both industry and alternative medicine, as it has therapeutic properties that can bring several benefits to physical and mental health, and is therefore a relevant option for the treatment of anxiety, stress, extreme fatigue, migraines, among other conditions. Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge of the population of the Metropolitan Region of Recife about aromatherapy with orange essential oil and its health benefits. Methodology: This is a quantitative interventional action-research study, characterized by requiring the active involvement of researchers and action on the part of participants. A 10-question questionnaire was applied to assess the population's knowledge about aromatherapy and its therapeutic use with orange essential oil. Results: Most respondents (91%) had never had contact with sweet orange essential oil, and more than 70% of respondents stated that they were not aware of the medicinal properties of sweet orange. These results reveal a lack of knowledge about the specific therapeutic benefits of this essential oil, which is widely used in aromatherapy. Conclusion: The essential oils extracted from this plant have proven properties, such as antidepressant, calming, and immune system-strengthening effects. However, it was found that there is a knowledge gap and a significant level of misinformation, especially regarding the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy with orange. It is important to emphasize the need for information and education about aromatherapy and its therapeutic benefits. Sweet orange is a promising option due to its effects on muscle relaxation, promoting emotional balance, and relieving stress and anxiety. However, this information needs to be disseminated accurately and responsibly to avoid the dissemination of unfounded theories that are harmful to health.
